My Pro-Choice Perspective
What being a Pro-Choice Therapist means to me:
A pro-choice therapist's role is to support the individual making the decision, anyone that person chooses to involve in the decision, and individuals who work in the field where those decisions are made. This support also extends to doing the initial work so that a person in the future who needs these services can get easy and affordable access to them and helping connect those to resources when they are unable to find them independently. I believe that a pro-choice therapist does not turn "on" or "off" their beliefs when situations are uncomfortable and should be actively involved in conversations where needed to facilitate change and increase access.
Why I think bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are important:
In my work with clients, there are many times when we feel out of control and powerless. Not having reproductive freedom and body autonomy adds to the complex plate of things we cannot control. In times where so many other things are uncertain, individuals do not need to be concerned about whether they can make decisions for themselves or if someone else is doing it for them. I want the work that I do with clients to empower them to make their own decisions, not ones bound by others' legal standards or religious leanings.
